UN Women Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: A Commitment to Action

“In 1995, in China, 189 governments adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a comprehensive roadmap for gender equality and the empowerment of women. The Global Leaders’ meeting is the culmination of an 18-month-long journey, spearheaded by UN Women, which included the review of the Beijing Platform for Action at its 20th anniversary. National reviews by 167 countries were undertaken that identified achievements and gaps, providing national blueprints for action to achieve gender equality as a major contribution to achieving the SDGs. On 27 September 2015, world leaders made concrete commitments on how to close the identified gaps and change the trajectory of gender equality and the empowerment of women as key drivers of the new development framework and the Sustainable Development Goals.”   Source: UN Women
